I Told My Three Children I Was Homeless After My Husband Died—

Danny looked down at his hands.I knew that expression. He had worn it since childhood whenever Michael found a way to make him feel small.

But this time, Danny didn’t apologize.

I reached for the second envelope.

Stephanie snatched it from my hand before I could pass it to her.

“Fine. Let’s see what Dad wrote to me.”

She opened it and pulled out two pages.

Her eyes moved quickly across the first few lines.

Then she stopped.

“Mom, what does this mean?”

“Read it.”

She swallowed and continued silently.

I watched her face lose its color.

“What?” Michael demanded.

Stephanie turned the paper toward him.

It was a copy of a handwritten note Walt had made after a conversation with her the previous summer.

Stephanie called today. She asked whether we had considered selling the house and moving somewhere smaller. She mentioned that if we needed help, she and Mark would be willing to manage our investments.

I asked whether she wanted to help us because we were struggling or because she believed we had assets she could manage.

She changed the subject.

I am beginning to worry that our children see us as an opportunity rather than as their parents.
